MP Leona Alleslev’s Constituency Youth Council Community Project donates toiletries to local food pantries Aurora
On Saturday June 30th , Leona Alleslev, Member of Parliament for Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill and her Constituency Youth Council (CYC) donated items to the Aurora Food Pantry through their Community Toiletries Drive Project.
The CYC worked hard over the last few months to collect items like shampoo, soap, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, diapers and more to help residents in need.
Constituency Youth Councils are a federal government initiative that provides youth the opportunity to meet regularly with their Member of Parliament to help ensure young Canadians have a voice in matters important to them, and that their ideas are incorporated in the Government’s decision-making. The Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill Constituency Youth Council is made up of fifteen students aged 15 to 25 years that meet regularly to advise MP Alleslev of their perspectives on national issues such as employment, access to education, building stronger communities, climate change, innovation and clean growth.
This year, CYCs across the country created and implemented a project that allows them to become more involved in local issues and give back to our community. The Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill CYC decided to run a Community Toiletries Drive as they found that many local food pantries do not have enough hygiene items to meet the needs of local residents that use their services. Along with the Aurora Food Pantry, toiletries will also be donated to Welcoming Arms in Aurora and Light on the Hill Church in Richmond Hill.
The Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill CYC 2018/2019 session will be accepting applications in September 2018. “Youth is a priority not only for our government, but for me as well. I am so fortunate to have 15 brilliant and involved students from Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill that decided to be a part of my Constituency Youth Council for our 2017/2018 session. Youth Councils educate our young people on how the federal government works, develop their critical skills of leadership and positive debate, and engage them in our community. I am proud that this year’s Youth Council was able to successfully develop and implement their Toiletries Drive Project to help give back to our community.” - Leona Alleslev, Member of Parliament for Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill
